Help Keep Wide World Books Open!
As most of you know, I announced in early February that the store would sadly be closing at the end of February. In the days following that announcement, hundreds of customers and travel professionals came forward to share their love for the store, and many asked if there was anything they could do to help keep it open. Several told us about the Seattle Mystery Bookshop, which has been able to save their store through a crowd funding campaign. Inspired by their success and the support of our customers, I’m launching a similar campaign to raise the $50,000 needed to pay off some back bills and expand our inventory. While it’s uncomfortable asking people for money, if Wide World customers see a value in keeping the store open, I’d love to give this a try!
To help with the campaign, several of our travel partners have stepped forward and offered some great incentives to donors, such as free bags and discounts on tours. Rick Steves’ Europe, one of our major supporters, has generously donated ten of his 7-day best of city tours toIstanbul, London, Paris, or Rome. You write us a check for $2000 and Rick is donating that entire amount to help us reach our fundraising goal. In exchange for your $2000 contribution to the store, you’ll get to choose which of these exciting tours you’d like to take, with the cost of the tour (not including airfare) fully covered! With over 100 departures to choose from, it should be easy for you to find the perfect tour!
We hope you will join us in this effort to save Wide World Books! Together we can keep the oldest travel bookstore in the country — and important community resource for travel advice, presentations, and support groups — open.
The campaign will run through April 15th. In the meantime, we will NOT be closing the store at the end of February and will continue to be open (and restocking shelves) at least through the end of April. And if the campaign is a success, we hope to continue for years to come!
How You Can Help
Our goal is to raise $50,000, which is what we need to keep the store open. This is a one-time fund raising effort intended to pay off back bills, expand our inventory, increase advertising to attract additional customers, and upgrade our computers and website. In addition, we will be exploring additional services for our customers, such as travel consulting and planning. There are three ways you can help:
- Visit our GoFundMe (www.gofundme.com/wideworldbooks) page to make a contribution. Several of the donation levels offer attractive incentives, such as tour discounts, free travel gear, and Wide World logo items. The goal is to raise $30,000 through this site – if we don’t reach $30,000, your money will be returned in full, with no cost to you.
- Come by Wide World Books & Maps and write us a check for $2000, good toward a free Rick Steves’ Europe 7-day tour of Istanbul, London, Paris, or Rome - your choice of destination and departure date! We will hold your check until we reach the $30,000 goal described above. 100% of the money you donate for the tour will go directly to Wide World Books! Once we’ve met our goal, we’ll put you in touch with a tour manager at the Rick Steves’ Europe headquarters, who will help you book your tour. Please do not contact Rick’s store about this in the meantime – we will provide you with the contact details you need when the time comes to book your tour. If we do not raise $30,000 through the GoFundMe campaign, we will return your check to you in April. Rick has donated a total of ten of these tours, so first come, first served!
- Continue to visit us at the store, whether or not you’re able to donate! If you’re not able to contribute to the campaign, that’s okay — continuing to be a loyal customer for years to come will also help us keep the store alive. We welcome your ideas as to how to make the store and location best serve the needs of the community.
